How do I stop my Xbox Live attempted from saying IP Address Failed and how can I get it to work?
Now here is a frustrating dilemma I have been facing since the return of my Xbox 360 console from repairs (due to the occurrence of the dreaded red rings of death) about 11 – 12 months ago. After the very long and annoying waiting period of four weeks for my Xbox 360 to return I discovered that I could no longer connect or use Xbox Live.

The first of my series of questions is very simple, since my subscription card only lasts a year and I haven’t been able to play for more than that will I still be able to use it even though it has been more than 12 months (without play)?
Now please allow me to continue and I stress here that I would greatly appreciate in depth answers and How-to guides as well as an answerers constant (if needed) return to this question to answer the questions and review the answers that I may post in additional details.
Now to the meat of my dauntingly present burger of a problem.

Before the RRoD I had the pleasure to enjoy a variety of multiplayer modes including those of

Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Medal of Honour Airbourne, Team Fortress 2 etc

which I miss and now I cannot enjoy the multiplayer aspects of the games I have purchased including

F.E.A.R, Gears of War 2, Brothers in Arms Hells Highway, Rainbow Six Vegas, Far Cry 2, Fable 2, Splinter Cell Double Agent and more. I am also missing out on great demos for Resident Evil 5, LOTR Conquest and F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin as well as DLC such as Operation Anchorage and the upcoming Lost and Damned. Also with games like LOTR Conquest, Tom Clancy’s EndWar Left 4 Dead and Call of Duty World at War released my desire for the return of the great gaming experience that is Xbox Live expands.
Ok, maybe now the actual meat… of the meat…
I have been attempting to connect with the Wireless Network Adaptor and the first two sections of the test work… then when I reach the IP Address the message always says “Failed”. I don’t know how it worked the first time I ever used Xbox Live before the RRoD.
I have searched my computer and found many IP Addresses (not knowing which one is needed) and have tried to enter all manually in the Network Settings.
Why is it not working? How can I get my IP Address to work? Where can I find my IP Address?
These are the main questions which the title of my segment intend for you to answer.
Sorry for dragging on, I do not wish to pull you into my frustration but I do request, as stated before for detailed explanations and help (since I do not know to many computer and internet things) and the return to this question as many times as possible to view the updates and answer them.
Thank you for your help and if there is any information you need please tell me how to find the answers (if their buried in my computer somewhere).

What exactly do you mean by power cycle the router and how do you do it?
If I restore to factory defaults will I have to enter the WEP/WPA key again? I can’t remember where the key is so how would I find it?

Author answers:

1- Power Cycle the Router.

2- Restore the console network settings to factory defaults, and then test XBOX Live.

3- Get the Network Configuration from the PC and enter it exactly the same on the Console except for the IP Address, you will add 5 on the IP address you got from the Pc.
Ex: PC IP address: 192.168.0.5 – Console IP address: 192.168.0.10

4- Wired Or Wireless?

A- Wired

a- Try a different Ethernet cable.

B- Try a different Port on the Router.

C- Try a different Router.

B- Wireless

a- Check how many signal bars do you have on the wireless mode section of the dashboard.
(System menu – Network settings – Edit Settings – ( below the wireless mode ).
If it is less than 3 bars, then you need to get the console closer to the wireless router / access point.

B- Make sure that the router does not have MAC filtering enabled, (check with router support) and if it is enabled direct the customer to the wireless router support to add the MAC address of the console to the allowed list, or to disable the MAC filtering.

To get the MAC address of the console Go To:
(System Menu – Network Settings – Edit Settings – Additional Settings – Advanced Settings – Wired MAC Address).

C- Make sure you have entered the right wireless security key (even if it says connected).

D- Try a different Wireless Adapter (even if it is green).

E- Try a different Wireless Router or a different console.
