Stop Xbox Live from saying IP Address Failed

Donna asks…

How do I stop my Xbox Live attempted from saying IP Address Failed and how can I get it to work?

How do I stop my Xbox Live attempted from saying IP Address Failed and how can I get it to work?
Now here is a frustrating dilemma I have been facing since the return of my Xbox 360 console from repairs (due to the occurrence of the dreaded red rings of death) about 11 – 12 months ago. After the very long and annoying waiting period of four weeks for my Xbox 360 to return I discovered that I could no longer connect or use Xbox Live.

The first of my series of questions is very simple, since my subscription card only lasts a year and I haven’t been able to play for more than that will I still be able to use it even though it has been more than 12 months (without play)?
Now please allow me to continue and I stress here that I would greatly appreciate in depth answers and How-to guides as well as an answerers constant (if needed) return to this question to answer the questions and review the answers that I may post in additional details.
Now to the meat of my dauntingly present burger of a problem.

Before the RRoD I had the pleasure to enjoy a variety of multiplayer modes including those of

Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Medal of Honour Airbourne, Team Fortress 2 etc

which I miss and now I cannot enjoy the multiplayer aspects of the games I have purchased including

F.E.A.R, Gears of War 2, Brothers in Arms Hells Highway, Rainbow Six Vegas, Far Cry 2, Fable 2, Splinter Cell Double Agent and more. I am also missing out on great demos for Resident Evil 5, LOTR Conquest and F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin as well as DLC such as Operation Anchorage and the upcoming Lost and Damned. Also with games like LOTR Conquest, Tom Clancy’s EndWar Left 4 Dead and Call of Duty World at War released my desire for the return of the great gaming experience that is Xbox Live expands.
Ok, maybe now the actual meat… of the meat…
I have been attempting to connect with the Wireless Network Adaptor and the first two sections of the test work… then when I reach the IP Address the message always says “Failed”. I don’t know how it worked the first time I ever used Xbox Live before the RRoD.
I have searched my computer and found many IP Addresses (not knowing which one is needed) and have tried to enter all manually in the Network Settings.
Why is it not working? How can I get my IP Address to work? Where can I find my IP Address?
These are the main questions which the title of my segment intend for you to answer.
Sorry for dragging on, I do not wish to pull you into my frustration but I do request, as stated before for detailed explanations and help (since I do not know to many computer and internet things) and the return to this question as many times as possible to view the updates and answer them.
Thank you for your help and if there is any information you need please tell me how to find the answers (if their buried in my computer somewhere).

Thank you for your answer. Here are some things I would like cleared up.
What exactly do you mean by power cycle the router and how do you do it?
If I restore to factory defaults will I have to enter the WEP/WPA key again? I can’t remember where the key is so how would I find it?

Thanks again.

Author answers:

1- Power Cycle the Router.

2- Restore the console network settings to factory defaults, and then test XBOX Live.

3- Get the Network Configuration from the PC and enter it exactly the same on the Console except for the IP Address, you will add 5 on the IP address you got from the Pc.
Ex: PC IP address: – Console IP address:

4- Wired Or Wireless?

A- Wired

a- Try a different Ethernet cable.

B- Try a different Port on the Router.

C- Try a different Router.

B- Wireless

a- Check how many signal bars do you have on the wireless mode section of the dashboard.
(System menu – Network settings – Edit Settings – ( below the wireless mode ).
If it is less than 3 bars, then you need to get the console closer to the wireless router / access point.

B- Make sure that the router does not have MAC filtering enabled, (check with router support) and if it is enabled direct the customer to the wireless router support to add the MAC address of the console to the allowed list, or to disable the MAC filtering.

To get the MAC address of the console Go To:
(System Menu – Network Settings – Edit Settings – Additional Settings – Advanced Settings – Wired MAC Address).

C- Make sure you have entered the right wireless security key (even if it says connected).

D- Try a different Wireless Adapter (even if it is green).

E- Try a different Wireless Router or a different console.

What to do when xbox 360 arrives from Microsoft?

William asks…

What to do when xbox 360 arrives from Microsoft?

I recently bought a xbox 360 second hand from this guy that tried to fix my original 360 but could not so I bought a 360 off him for $100.

My original was out of warranty and I did not want to pay a $100 to Microsoft to get it fixed. I found this guy online that has a business fixing 360‘s and mods them. I bought a new 360 from him that had a HDMI port. My original had major freezing issues and had the e71 and e69 errors and after they could not fix it, I decided to get this new one or one that worked because it was not really new just worked and thats what matters.

After three days of using it and it working fine it displayed the e74 error. I called Microsoft, set up a repair and sent it off. About a week since I sent it Microsoft told me that console was under investigation because it had a serial number that did not match the one that I gave out for the repair. After the investigation they found that is was tampered with. Which I knew in the beginning it was because the guy that I bought it off of told me it had a mod that allowed you to play games off burned CD’s. I just thought Microsoft would at least attempt to fix it because the serial number I gave them was still in warranty.

They told me, they were not going to fix it because they did not want to fix getting a electrical shock from trying to open it. Really? I don’t think there would be any current flowing in it if you don’t have any cables hooked up to it, to give it a current. Anyway, I checked my repair status for my console and to my surprise the console that was listed was a different one. I remember the 360 I sent off was a Elite system, it looked like a Pro on the outside with the white color.Elites are supposed to be in a Black color. Don’t ask why it was white as whatever happened to the xbox before I bought it is out of my hands.

So, the console that was listed was a 360 Arcade system and the serial number was different from the Elite I sent in so this has to be a replacement console they are shipping back to me. I called Microsoft and told them about it and from there records it says its the same console they are shipping back to me just not repaired. What? I told them that I saw that there was a Arcade system coming back to me and it has a different serial number telling me it is a new or replacement console. Microsoft was surprised by this, they told me if get a different console back like what I think is happening, to call them back.

Why? If I get my modded 360 back and I set it up and it gives me the E74 error I am going to be very upset. As I am getting a free invitation to the Halo Reach beta and I do not want to miss out on that. If I get a new console or at least new to me which I think will happen because I have seen proof its different from the one I sent in for repairs because of the different serial numbers then I am going to keep it. I have been through hell and back trying to get a working 360 for almost a month. I believe I am getting a replacement so I am planning on keeping something that is going to work.

What does Microsoft want me to do? Send it back to them? No thank you, They are in charge of what console comes back to me and it looks like they are giving me a replacement as they did not even attempt to fix mine. I learned a lesson and that is never to buy a console or any computer second hand as to what this experience has gave me. I know Trade N Play fixes console from what there site says. Does anyone know the costs for repairing a Xbox 360. That is going to be my plan, if I get my same console I sent in and I find out it still has the e74 error. Its either that, or see if Game Stop or Play N Trade accept a broken 360 for a trade in. So I can at least get some sort of a profit out of it to help me in saving up to buy a brand new xbox 360.

On the other hand if I am getting a completely different system, which I am pretty sure is going to happen since I have proof. Then I don’t have to worry about nothing if it boots up with no problems or error codes. Then again it could be my console I shipped off just with two different serial numbers which would be really rare. But I highly doubt that unless it has parts of a arcade and a elite system in it or the codes just mistaken it for two different consoles.

Which again would be very bad a strange. But I will refuse to believe that until my 360 arrives at my doorstep and until I hook it up and check numbers with it with what I have in my records. Also see if there are any problems with it starting up. I really think this is a completely different console from what is telling me when I sign in to my account and check my repair status for the console. Different number, different system type, different xbox 360. It least it looks that way.

What should I do when I get “this” xbox 360? What should I do moving forward? As I can’t get a new xbox 360 until July and I am only doing that if I get my “same” conso

Author answers:

OK, so I only read as far as your having sent a modded console into Microsoft. Not the brightest thing to do. They’ll just send you back your console unrepaired, and if it wasn’t before it’ll be banned from Live now.

Daniel asks…

Being banned from Xbox 360?

Well, first of all, when i say banned i don’t mean banned like when they fully take it away. I’m talking about that thing when they take your GS away and put CHEATER on your gamer label thing. I didn’t know they could do this until recently. I know that 1 common ways are by modding your xbox 360. What types of mods do they mean by this, and how do they find out. Also, I play Halo:Reach a lot and I like to farm for Cr.

I’ve heard some stuff about Bungie finding out about people doing this and they get banned or whatever it’s called. What’s the chance of this happening, whats the punishment, and is this even true? I usually do the one on ONI swordbase with the Artillery locator.Does that one count? Also, does doing the Gruntapocalypse one count as farming credits.

Thanks for all your help. I just got my xbox 360 over the summer and I can’t lose it this quickly.

Author answers:

Bungie is more likely to reset your cR count and ban you from earning them for a time. Taking your GS away usually comes from when people hack the system to unlock achievements they didn’t earn. There are many ways to tell, most commonly when an achievement that requires you to be online (like win a multiplayer match) is unlocked while offline.

Even if your GS is reset, you aren’t banned from Live – you just won’t be able to earn those GS for the achievements you unlocked before the reset, and your gamerzone will be marked as “Cheater”.

Donald asks…

NBA 2K12
Microsoft Points
Halo anniversary
X12 Turtle Beach
Assassins Creed (Not sure which one to get.)
Or 12 Month gold (I already have about 4 months so I dont need this right away)
Or any other Games/Acceserries you think are good!!! Or tell me whatever You would buy if you were in my shoes. Thanks and God Bless.

Author answers:

Well I heard this a lot, well to start don’t ask for peoples opinions, review the products, use Youtube or Amazon for reviews on the products like I do. Then I will calculate my top 3 then watch them again, then pick a winner. But one thing, no point buying Halo, its just NO.1 but with better graphics.

PlayStation 3 V Xbox 360?

Steven asks…

PlayStation 3 V Xbox 360?

Xbox 360

1. How did PS3 loose it’s popularity so fast when PS2 sold 114 million units worldwide? Right now XBox 360 is bascially killing PS3; Better graphics, better ratings and reviews and far more units sold.

2. What is the chances of PS3 making better quality games in the future when game delevopers learn to reach the full potienial of the PS3. Will the XBox 360‘s potienial power run dry and then the PS3 in a couple of years pass the XBox 360?

3. How good will GTA IV be on PS3 and Xbox 360? Will GTA IV smash all the previous Xbox and PlayStation records like: GTA: San Andreas and Halo 2, and win alot of game awards? Or will Halo 3 be the biggest hit on Xbox 360?

Author answers:

Xbox 360 all the way!! PS3 only sounds better because people believe what Sony tell them. It was the same with the PS2. It was so crap to begin with and people still flocked to get their hands on it. I know so many people who are on to their 2nd or even 3rd PS2 because of the poorly built console and the poor support from Sony.

As for the PS3 being the more powerful console, it’s not! Infact it lags a long way behind. The graphic bandwith on the 360 is about 5 times that of the PS3. (PS3 has a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s while the Xbox has a total system bandwidth of 278.4 GB/s) Remember that the frequency of a processor (3.2ghz) is not whats important, it how many mb or gb per second it can push through.

This has already been shown in several games. Just compare screen shots for:
Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3)

Gears of War (360)

The detail in the 360 game is clear to see.

Also have a look at this article about Ridge Racer. The reason for this lack of detail on the PS3’s part is simply because is cannot process the complex graphics as quick as the Xbox 360

Lots of people have also been saying ‘Just give the PS3 some time and there will be more and better games available than for the 360’. Well that is still a big question mark because as developers freely admit, it is a lot easier to develop games for the 360.

The last point I’ll make is about the whole HD vs Blu-Ray thing. This is more of an observation than anything. What if the HD/Blu-Ray war goes in favour of HD? Doesn’t that make the PS3 kinda useless for watchin movies? Also, Sony themselves have said in the past that playing a lot of dvd’s on the PS2 puts a lot of strain on the console. In the real world this ended up with a lot of useless PS2’s. Couldn’t the PS3 go the same way. At least with the HD option being an addon for the 360, u’ll only have to change the hd player if it packs in (or Blu-Ray win the battle). And these will be cheaper in future.

Now, just to really piss everyone off. GO BUY A PC!!! They have been giving us better performance and graphics for years 🙂

Hope that helps
